enthusiasts are already taking to the game’s official Discord server to piece together cryptic morsels of information into something more meaningful – like real-life archeologists, in a way.

The cleverest players will use the phantom runs of failed attempts from other players to their advantage and avoid the missteps and mistakes that led to their doom.

The fast-paced action is also slightly hampered by minor performance issues the deeper you delve into a temple with a gang of spectral phantoms in tow.

However, players who deploy it as a pass-the-controller experience at their next party will almost certainly get a lot out of it. This is an excellent game to play with a few friends after a drink or two, with everyone taking a run and passing the controls on when they either die or complete a level. HOLY how have I not gotten a full run yet T_T In Phantom Abyss, you compete with other players around the world to steal an idol from a temple filled with tough jumps, booby traps, and hidden keys. Using a whip for traversal, freerun your way through Phantom Abyss the danger to be the first (and only) player to reach the goal. Phantom Abyss is available on PC in Steam Early Access June 22nd. Phantom Abyss is a massive asynchronous multiplayer game that casts players into procedurally-generated temples and tasks them with retrieving the sacred relics hidden within deadly chambers. Intrepid adventurers will dodge scores of hidden traps, leap treacherous chasms, and flee relentless guardians through branching paths until one of the relics are claimed or the devices of death overwhelm them.

It's got lots of dungeons to explore, tons of items to equip, and some pretty cool boss fights. It missed a good opportunity by not letting you progress through the story in co-op mode, but it's still a fun single-player experience.

At one point, I was being chased down a narrow corridor by a flaming head Guardian who was trying to eat me. After falling through the cracks right by the doorway, I restarted at the other end of the corridor. Unfortunately, this meant that the Guardian lay between me and the next checkpoint.

Asynchronous Multiplayer – Explore the perilous halls and colossal rooms of each temple alongside the phantoms of fallen players that came before you and use their successes and failures to your advantage to progress deeper than they ever could have hoped.
